I’ve been a bit sad watching sunsets recently and I’ve realized it’s because we have too darned much in common. We’re both past our hey day, getting ready for the cold and dark to take over. A bit morbid, I’ll grant you. However the key is whether you see the world as linear or circular. The sun sets, it rises again the next day. Circular. Or it’s linear and we just die and that’s the end of it.
Circular. Like the man says, we’re living in interesting times. Think about the The Last Poets “When the Revolution Comes” (1970) https://youtu.be/qTrEPyV24L0?si=qgzz1X7JjMTIfhz3 and Gil Scott-Heron’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” (1972) https://youtu.be/vwSRqaZGsPw?si=_oargMVpKTIm–0Y They thought they were ready for revolution then. Baby boomers of all colors and shapes were descending on Haight-Ashbury and King’s Road, and taking off in their VW or Citroën, overland to India via exotic places like Iran or Afghanistan, or other places more likely today to sell both the car and the driver’s organs off for spare parts.
At that time, Jim Crow was getting older and weaker, although biting down on change with dentures clamped firmly shut. The kids had power in numbers but dissipated themselves; they zapped between free love (free from the risk of pregnancy but not STDs), plentiful drugs (and the ODs that came with them), opposition to the ruling class or opposition to whatever that guy was saying on the corner over there (because we’re right and they’re wrong, we’re honest and they’re sell-outs, we’ve got the spirit of the universe on our side and they have old gods smelling of camphor). The revolution would not be televised because they could never get behind a common goal, only agreeing that the old white folks running everything were phonies. The revolution. Hah.
Now I’m getting too old for revolution. If I were cast in the movie, the only role left for me is the “old but brave” one, willing to jump in front of the tank or do that dangerous spy mission because my life is almost over and my character would want to give the kids a chance for a better life, or whatever. In any case, the revolution will not be televised because the whole darn thing’ll be generated with AI.
Foro’s ready. He’s been listening to Dana Lyons “Cows With Guns”:
