Needs Must

Needs must: from the site : https://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/needs-must.html: Necessity compels. In current usage this phrase is usually used to express something that is done unwillingly but with an acceptance that it can’t be avoided; for example, I really don’t want to cook tonight, but needs must, I suppose.

There are things you do when you are part of a couple. Today I belayed my partner because he’s been sick with Covid for what seems like forever. He’s had to rest the last few days and I’m sure it was really frustrating for him. As for me, my foot hurt today and it wasn’t comfortable for me to climb. So “I didn’t want to just spend the afternoon belaying someone while they got to climb (one of the things I love to do most in this world) and I couldn’t, but needs must.”

I want the damned halo for saintliness. I am one nice girlfriend. It’s like taking a fasting person to their favorite restaurant, and stuffing yourself in front of them. Or cutting off a huge slice of chocolate cake in front someone with diabetes. Or hopping up one or two banal little steps to get to …. (add item here: train, museum, toilet, etc.) in front of someone in a wheelchair.

And yes (if anyone has been following the saga of an old lady’s feet) my foot hurts again. The Morton’s neuroma was acting all electric (great in a prog rock band, less good in feet) and the tendinitis was feeling a bit fired up (and that after a cortisone injection ten days ago.) It’s not just my feet that are irritated at the moment. (I want to climb! It’s my favorite activity! okay, I like sex, and good food, and drinking coffee in a café in the summer, but climbing is way up there in favorite activities).

I’m just starting to get worried that I might not be able to climb without pain in the future. I’ve been putting my faith in modern medicine to fix things, but it might just be that they can’t.

Sigh.

At least the views are nice here.

Foro got to see all the pictures of the day
