It’s funny, I read Into the Wild a long time ago, but I didn’t remember that this was in the journal of the young man who died. I remember this quote more from a bit of graffiti written on the wall of the old building of my school. It was the first thing I saw when I got to work in the morning.
The place where I work was rebuilt in 2010ish, but for the fifty years before that, it had been “temporary” barracks made of wood. It was a lot of fun, because we knew for years that it was going to be torn down, and the art students had a field day with it. Every year they would repaint a wall or a side of the building, and we had space for graffiti, some official, some unofficial.
There weren’t many students and if you wanted to find someone, you only had a few places to look. I quite liked that old building most of the time, but a bit less when it rained because the roof didn’t always keep the wet out.
I was just thinking about the quote on the side of the wall, and I wish I was with someone today because I’ve been having a lovely day. It was supposed to be a bit too warm in the afternoon, so I had a breakfast picnic and then hunkered down in the afternoon to avoid the heat. I had a bit of work to do, and did it, but I also had time just to relax a bit.
At the moment, I’m sitting out on my balcony, enjoying the beginnings of a sunset. Foro is here, and I have a surprising guest waiting for dinner.
